Electrical and Lighting
When building a new home, lighting is a very important aspect. It can be used to set the mood, showcase artwork, enhance landscaping and illuminate the outside for safety. The size of amps in the electrical panel can dictate how extravagant you can get with all of these things. Most single family homes can operate off a 200 amp rated electrical service. Larger custom homes that may have a detached garage/workshop or a guest house usually require a larger service due to more amenities such as a second full kitchen, extra a/c equipment, swimming and Jacuzzi equipment or even outdoor lighting for a tennis court. The livable square footage dictates the number of lighting and convenience outlets you’ll need. A larger home may require a 300 to 400 amp service panel versus a standard 200 amp service.
UPGRADES
There are a lot of features that can be added to your home for comfort, atmosphere and personal convenience. These features include:
- Rope lighting
- Under counter/cabinet lighting in the kitchen
- Christmas lighting eave outlets
- Pot shelf lighting
- Interior floor outlets
- Built in ironing center
- Ceiling fan boxes
- Pantry door switch
- Structured wiring for phones, TV., surround sound and satellite TV. prewire
- Pool equipment

You should plan out exactly what you need from your electrical system, consider both lighting and outlets when meeting with your architect. This will help to ensure that the lighting will be adequate for your needs. Ask yourself some basic questions, do have an area where you’d like to sit down and read? Do you need overhead lighting or will a table lamp provide the light? Do you need a switched floor outlet for a lamp next to the couch in the middle of the room? Do you have a great piece of art you’d like to showcase? Taking the time now to think out your lighting plan will pay off when you can “see” your beautiful new home.
